Re: Successful CVT Replacement Completed

I had changed the fluid and both filters at around 100k. It was a complete change too as I pumped out everything in the torque converter by pulling a line off the cooler. I used good Red Line CVT fluid and it was running fine. The failure was in the spider gears in the transmission. I was a little h...

Successful CVT Replacement Completed

I had posted about replacing my CVT with a junkyard unit late last year. I had to RE-replace that unit in December. The new unit has been happily running now for three months, so this post will probably jinx it. :D I thought I would do an overview for those who choose to take it on. This car has rea...

Re: Valve Lash according to maintenance schedule F

I did the valve check. None were out of spec. I wouldn't worry about it.

Also, no gasket replacement is needed for the valve cover if your not ham-handed. Scrape off the old RTV, apply as directed and you're good.

Re: CVT appears to have bit it at 165k miles - expected lifespan?

Stand by.... I'm on my third driver's side axle seal and it's leaking too. Hoping it's not the diff bearing in the unit I received. Once this is done I will post the whole thing. The Excursion got a remanufactured V10 to replace my f-up. That is running great and it should - it was only $8,000 after...

Re: CVT appears to have bit it at 165k miles - expected lifespan?

SUCCESS!!! Finally got it in this weekend and fixed a couple little issues today. We’re back at 166k with a 30k transmission. This thing should run to 300k now! It would have been done a couple weeks earlier but I found that the best place to order seals is OEM because every one listed elsewhe...

Re: CVT appears to have bit it at 165k miles - expected lifespan?

Sorry I haven't replied. The used CVT finally arrived last Tuesday. I plan to install it next weekend. It's a 30,000 mile unit and they also included (forgot to remove) the transfer case, so that was a nice bonus. I am also planning to replace the water pump, timing chain tensioner and guides at the...

Re: CVT appears to have bit it at 165k miles - expected lifespan?

With a small bit of work you can use a good Ford VCM2 clone (about $150-250 on the ebay) in place of a Suzuki SDT2, assuming you can find a copy of the Suzuki SDT-II PC application. If you do find a copy of the SDT II software, you will find most of the documentation is in Japanese. This is a link ...

Re: CVT appears to have bit it at 165k miles - expected lifespan?

You might also want to grab the TCM out of the same vehicle as the CVT was harvested from if at all possible. There are multiple versions, and they are basically matched to the transmission they control. A long time ago I garnished this info while kibitzing with the parts manager at the now Ex-Deal...

Re: CVT appears to have bit it at 165k miles - expected lifespan?

So that was a dead end. I pulled the transfer case and split it. I couldn't find any gear damage. However, I pulled the pan on the CVT and did find metal shavings in the pan. I'm thinking the torque converter and belt/pullet assembly of the CVT is fine, but the actual differential/spider gear assemb...
