Edmunds depr of a middle of the road SE AWD is about 33% 16K mv after 1 year 12K miles, this past year with jap supply disruptions some used jap cars have appreciated

honda 4cyl accord sedan 25K new sticker down to 18K, about 25% depr

the wildcard is if suzi throws in the towel and they're only selling 25K total vehicles a year and only about 6K Kizashis - they've got to be losing their shirts

my local dealer made no attempt to find me an AWD just said they didn't have any in stock, I traveled an hour to test drive one which I have now on an extended test drive overnight, they tried a bunch of sleazy car dealer tricks on me which I won't bother detailing but I'll either offer them a low ball purchase offer or maybe discuss a lease. that shifts the risk to them if suzi goes tits up or even just poor resale values

I don't know that 500 per year with most about $500 off of sticker in the U.S. is bad for Suzuki. They're seeding the car in world markets as a "halo" car sold by existing dealers, with minimal sales targets. Perhaps this strategy also helps get SX4s and Grand Vitaras sold. Fixed costs for a new campaign in a country would include adapting it for the country's regulations, and some other things, but most costs would seem to be variable.

Where does Edmunds get data on a new model? They don't. They're guessing - and based on NO data.

According to the latest press release from American Suzuki, U.S. Suzuki sales were up on all of the current models year-to-date as of November 30. The Kizashi was up 20%. http://media.suzuki.com/auto/?p=4

As to where Edmunds gets its guesses, I would think it would be by a computer program which takes into account various factors including possibly, for one, brand historical depreciation rates.

Total US car sales were up 10% and trucks and SUVs were up 12% so Suzuki is doing average. Mitsu sales were up about 50% but also on a low base.

If somebody like Ford or Hyundai were selling the Kiz with their nameplates as a fuel efficient SUV they'd be selling 10X as many and for a few grand more. (I wonder if they sell it in Europe.)

With maybe 10-15K total sales over it's lifetime there is such a small used car market it's tough to determine an "average".

Overall it's an excellent car but the dealer network and Suzuki viability in the US are dual clouds over the product. If Suzuki pulls an Isuzu that would suck big time.

If you look at the car as 20K investment then you are like a partner tied to the dealer network and the manufacturer. Anybody ever deal with an American Motors dealer? I got the same vibes from the Suzuki dealer I dealt with. Much better product but very limited support, everything done on the cheap and half hearted, a Kazashi wedged in among the Mitsus.

I took the car on an overnight test drive and I had the salesman, sales manager and his manager all offering me the advertised price with all the discounts they said I didn't qualify for the day before, $1500 price cut in 24 hours, what a bunch of crooks.

Wow...
Welcome to the forums. To be honest, I would just print that and use it to wipe my behind.

Remember, KBB / Edmunds are just guidelines based on estimate assessments. In the end, the market forces dictate the prices, and if you don't mind scrolling trough craiglist, ebay motors, and specially, autotrader; if you find me a used SLS for $13k, I'll buy it on the spot and give you $1K as finder's fee ;)

I was, in fact, surprised at seeing how high the used Kizashis are listed. Barely a discount from a great price when new.

I agree 100% with your statement with respect to the table above.

As for KBB values, I just ran buy and sell prices for my 2010 AWD GTS with 22,000 miles.

Trade-in western NC (NorCal higher) - $15,600. Private party sale $18,000.

On the estimated buying price from a dealer - $20,400.

I had KBB search within 75 miles and found about 12 (2010 & 2011) listed at around $18.000. Only one (an S model) had AWD.

So using their webpage to actually price is not a WOT - but that depreciation table appears to be totally bogus.

I don't know what book you are referring to, but my Blue Book (2011 November) shows my 2010 SLS with AWD at $21,067 "for sale by individual". Never, never trade a car to dealer, unless it has serious problems.
