Now I'm wondering why my pre-owned car had a non-OEM air filter with only 7500 miles on the odometer.

My new Wix air filter arrived so I installed it. It happened to be exactly the same as the filter that was already in the car. Basically, the previous owner had a Wix (or identical re-brand) air filter in the car with only 7500 miles on the odometer. Not sure why that was the case.

Interestingly, both sides of my new air filter are pink. The old one was white on the dirty side and a faded pink on the clean side, kind of like the OEM filter pictured above. I'm starting to think that the color may be a wear indicator used by the Wix filter. I wonder if the OEM filter was always two-tone or was all pink when new.

I should've noted that the OEM filter had approximately 12000km. I'm don't think the color is an indicator of anything considering the OEM filter is good for 50000km (according to Suzuki Canada). Unless it becomes transparent

OEM is 2-tone new out of the box.

I think I may end up going with the reusable/cleanable K&N, like I've put on all my motorcycles and some cars, for the past 20 years.

I have a K&N on another car that I don't really care about. Piss poor filtration with no power gains but more economical in the long run!

I never had a problem with them, kept them cleaned and oiled, and they work fine.

We have a K&N in ours. The dealership in Fox Lake says that the idle may have issues with any intake mod, even a simple K&N. I didn't notice any issues until I disassembled the entire intake assembly when trying to change the driver's side bulb without removing the bumper cover.

A bit off topic, but today I helped a coworker with a 2011 Honda CR-Z check her air filter. It is seriously the smallest air filter I've ever seen. It's about half the size of our cabin air filter. After all, that car is a hybrid with a 1.5 liter gas engine.

Interestingly, that filter was absolutely nasty. In fact, it was the dirtiest air filter I've ever seen and that car only has 40K miles used in an urban environment (Washington, DC). Not only that, it's a hybrid that shuts the engine off every time you come to a full stop with the car. This would seem to support that it should have a cleaner-than-usual air filter, but it was the opposite. It lead me to think that if a filter is smaller in size, it has a smaller surface area for filtration therefore will get dirtier faster. Basically, the smaller size should cause it to need replacement more often than a larger filter.
The car had the OE Honda filter made by Roki (formerly Tokyo Roki). I'm sure it's the filter that came in the car when it was manufactured in Japan.
I had her order a new one from Rockauto and also had her buy a new cabin air filter.
