I tried that, as well as starting in manual shift mode in 1st, with no noticeable difference. I think the 0-15 mph lag is due to the setup of the CVT (a product of a relatively high lower gear ratio I believe). But after that, note the below.
I found some interesting postings on optimum shift points. This is the point where the torque and hp delivered to the rear wheels in the next gear is equal/greater to the torque that the current gear has declined to. This usually happens around the peak engine hp RPM.
With a CVT, it gets to that point as soon as possible, then holds it as it constantly varies the effective gear ratio as speed increases. You may have noticed the RPM going up to 5800-5900 under full throttle and staying there. That is why some posters have noted how "buzzy" the CVT cars are - it goes up to this range (which is pretty noisy) and stays there.
With manual shifting, you go up and down the RPM range in each gear, and it only gets noisy at the shift points.
For best acceleration with the CVT, however, this implies that the fully auto mode should beat out manual CVT shifting, as the auto mode locks it in at its optimum power RPM and holds it there.
