More info here:
As early-generation electronic transmissions were introduced, it became common to use electronic control for secondary functions - such as kickdown and torque converter lock-up. The torque converter lock-up mechanism (aka torque converter clutch) is used to improve engine efficiency and fuel consumption at cruise. In this situation, the impeller and turbine sides of the torque converter are locked together to eliminate slip.

A page from a locally made vehicle (manufactured 1986- 1988)detailing how to check out the torque converter solenoid: http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/att ... lenoid.jpg This particular vehicle had a lockup button on top of the trans shift to disable the lock/ unlock function to improve driving around town.

I guess the question now is, in order to assist the OP, do our CVT cars have this nifty electronic TC lock-up command or not? Based on price point alone, I'd say no, but who's to say. I ned to look over the service manual and see what it has to say. Yet another possible cause of the problem, would then be wiring to the TC. Electronic TC, sounds overly complicated to me. I can't even imagine how that would be accomplished, reliably. Hence the possible problem. The TC is now a black box in other words. All this complication, and no one has a clue what to do when something is not quite right and the 'puter says it's all good.....I need to go out and find myself a mid to late 60s chevy to daily drive again!

I'd be most surprised if there wasn't an electronic lock up torque converter- it's the first step to improving the fuel consumption (and not "new" technology by any means.)

Actually, here you go:
The torque converter provides a range ensuring engine torque is increased to start up the vehicle. In addition, the lock up clutch is initiated around 10 km/h to reduce both power loss and fuel consumption.
from http://www.familycar.com.au/app/article ... izashi-awd - an interesting article as it goes into the technical side of the AWD system (I'll post the link in the AWD thread too.)
