Transmission won't engage

So, my 2011 (Automatic with AWD) decided it didn't want to move anymore. Car starts just fine, however, when I put it in gear, the car doesn't respond. No forward gears and no reverse.

Check engine light is on. Can't remember what code it had, but, I've replaced both the output speed sensor and the transmission position switch. Neither fixed the issue.

I've had two mechanics look at it, so far. Neither believe that the transmission itself is bad, and believe its something electrical. Last one thought that the CVT relay was bad and replaced it. Still no luck.

Hopefully somebody here can point me in another direction. I'm at a loss. Thanks

Once again...there's a very long powertrain warranty on these vehicle. Contact American Suzuki in Brea CA with your VIN and mileage to find out if your vehicle is still covered. If so, it's their problem...fix it or replace it.

Have you taken it to a proper Authorized Suzuki Service Location? With an issue with the CVT, you don't want to take it to any mechanic. Also, is your car still under the powertrain warranty (7 years, 100,000 miles)?
Use the following site to find an Authorized Suzuki Service Location if you haven't already taken that route.

Did you ever find out what was wrong. I have a 2012 Kizashi with 96k miles on it. But there are no dealers in the State of Georgia who do warranty work on Suzukis. I don't think it is the whole trans either. Mine will not engage either.

Could you give me a few more details such as 1 trouble codes on both engine and transmission. 2 Anything you noticed that was different in the way it acted or sounded leading up to the failure . 3 Has any services been done to the transmission and if so at what miles . 4 Take note of the fluid level and condition after car has been left setting overnight or more {the longer the better } Start the car and check to see if the level went down to its normal spot. 5 When put in forward gear and accelerated ,does it just rev up or does it feel like the brake is on ?

I have the same problem and I noticed this is left here unanswered. So I will continue this thread and post updates. I am sending my Kizashi to repair and I'll update on what they say.

I can give you a very accurate diagnosis but only if Im given detailed information. If you want a guess at this point , Im thinking that with the fluid full, no hint of movement in gear and a trouble code of output speed sensor. This would most likely mean a broken cvt belt. A high quality picture of debris in trans pan would also be helpful.

My OBD scanner died (was permanently connected to OBD port) so I did not have any means to read the trouble code. Just an engine icon light appeared in the dashboard. No further detail / no error message in the display between the gauges, just a usual D letter when selected drive mode. CVT fluid was full, clean, transparent, recently refilled. Since about a month back, with each engaging the D mode, I heard some metal sound, like 2-3 knocks from somewhere below. Last time I engaged the D, it felt like it is moving with difficulties, not so lively as usual. Then after 2 meters again the knock sound and the car stopped. That's it. It's been just towed to the service.

So when you get the trouble code, I’m expecting it to be an output speed sensor code. A defective speed sensor itself will not disable forward motion. This code leads people into changing the speed sensors only to find out that it did nothing and still has the codes. The speed sensors rarely fails. The transmission sees the belt slipping by comparing the two speed sensors signals against a map. It’s throwing a code because if it’s either slipping or broke. If there happens to be a second code P0777, this code indicates there is a pressure deficiency. Usually a broken primary. Sometimes a clogged screen but yet the material that’s clogging the screen is usually the debris from a primary pulley failure. What is the mileage on your car presently? If the miles are less than 150,000 and the transmission is clean then it is possible that all she would need is a belt. A belt is possibly changed without transmission removal but only by someone that has a lot of experience with the JF011E transmission and some special tools. This is a extreme shortcut. At my shop the bill would be around US$1000. If there was some primary pulley damage which is usually the failure on these transmissions, this would add another $300 to the bill

My "Mileage" is 170000 km, so about 105000 miles. I thought it was unusual for such a simple transmission to fail so early.
