There's no doubt that the polar ice caps are melting at an unprecedented rate which would affect all kinds of things from global temperatures to sea levels.
I agree that EVs can be rather impractical for many people. If one lived in a city, they could get by with an EV rather well. I personally could go for a Nissan Leaf right now and my driving habits would not be impacted too much in terms of range.
I also don't think the EV trend is all about the environment. For example, the biggest name in EVs is Tesla and they explicitly state that their car is more about performance than luxury or environmentalism. After all, they are luxury items that start at 62K, making them out of reach for many. The good thing is that they can be powered by cleaner sources of energy like wind, solar, hydroelectric, etc. and Tesla has shown great commitment to it.
At night, many small solar-powered buildings simply run on batteries that were charged by the solar panels during the day. Some even use fuel cells for power when solar power is not available. There's an aquarium in California that's powered off the grid and is powered by solar during the day and fuel cells at night. They've been at it for over 10 years.
Also, it's true that many grants are from the government, but a large majority are related to military research. My own father is an academic involved in government-funded research so I hear about it more than average. Also, my alma mater was the university that discovered the hole in the ozone layer. However, that's not what they were even researching. The research was actually for the US military related to intercontinental ballistic missiles or the like and it was in atmospheric research that they accidentally discovered the hole in the ozone layer. Just recently, an Australian research team found yet another hole in the ozone layer caused by other human-caused emissions.
There really shouldn't be a discussion about whether global warming/climate change is a real phenomenon or not. It should be about what to do about it before it's too late.
