I find my cruise control to be a lil strange. Set at a specific speed, when going on a downward slope on the highway, I can FEEL the car "slowing" down, or braking. Similarly, when going uphill, I can FEEL it trying to dashing forward / speeding up. This may make sense since the car probably needs to slow down or accelerate at down and uphill respectively to keep the same speed, but I just never experienced this in my previous cars. Prior cars all seemed to gently adjusted to the speed without me "feeling" the active effort. The resistance/braking feeling and sudden acceleration feeling make the cruise control feel quite unsmooth. Just took it for what it is, but am wndering if others experience the same?

Also, I've notice that when reaching a red light, while letting my foot off the gas and letting the car coast toward the light, when getting to alow enough speed, the car would jerk forward a lil faster, almost like the OPPOSITE of downshifting (engine braking), or as if I let my foot off the brake. Has anyone noticed? This has become more conspicuous to me lately.

Suzukis don't seem to do hills well at all....SX4, Kizashi, cruise control...whatever. If the word 'hill' is involved, seems like there's weirdness along with it.

I've noticed w/ cruise on in the Kiz that it actually seems to apply throttle going DOWN hill on occassion. I find that strange. Agree that, overall, the cruise is not as smooth as it could or should be. I have not experienced any of the other issues you speak of.

I have noticed the same thing with the cruise...I drive a "country" road to work in the morning and the speed changes from 30 to 40 to 55...there are hill as well. I notice this breaking at lower speeds primarily...not so much when you are moving at 75 or 80...

Driving my parent's CVT SX4, I always turned off the CC on hills as it'd make the engine wind up to a crazy RPM trying to keep a set speed. It was similar to how you describe on downhills, too.

W/ my 6-sp Kiz, it seems smooth as I keep it in 6th gear most the time and don't notice it giving it gas to keep up like I do in a CVT.

I see. Thanks for the feedback.

What about when just coasting with foot off either gas or brake, toward a red light / stop (not cruise control related). Anyone ever experienced a sudden loss of forward resistance when it reaches low enough of a speed and the car jerks FEELS like it jerks forward a bit? Kind of like the opposite of shifting down for engine braking. Is this a CVT characteristic?

CVT feels different under acceleration due to not switching between definitive gears, but I haven't really noticed anything when coasting to a stop. On cruise, I only use it on the highway going pretty straight , but that behavior is probably typical that you run into up and down hills. Maybe you should go for a ride with a mechanic at the dealer on the "coasting" issue just for peace of mind. If it is "typical" then you may want to paddle or shift it into a "gear" to get the engine braking.

The last eight cars I've owned have all had cruise control and they were all smooth going downhill.

My Kizashi very jerky going downhill with the cruise on.
I tried going downhill with the cruise off and making it as jerky by stabbing the gas and downshifting and upshifting, thats CVT shifting, but cannot duplicate the cruise jerking. I think it may be turning the injectors on and off faster than I can do it with the gas pedal. Or is it locking and unlocking the torque converter?

I have never experienced this jerkiness I usually set it at 60 to 100mph in 6th gear and its smooth up and down the hill and on curves. I have driven the cvt Kizashi but never had a chance to test the cruise control on it.

Ya I guess I will let it be for now. The sudden RPM increase and the feel of the car actually speeding up when going uphill... is a lil scary though... when on cruise control, but oh well...

I also feel a lil unsafe when the car suddenly jerks forward as the speed drops while I coast toward a stop, a lil unpredictable. Maybe my transmission is messed up. Only 8K on the car still

I haven't tried it yet, but what about putting the CVT into manual 6th "gear" while in cruise control? Is the CVT hunting for a "gear" when it does the hills in cruise?
