Changed the oil for the 22nd time (from 90k to 125k I did 5k oil changes. Then realized I was throwing money away, the engine would far outlast the CVT and went back to 7.5k changes). She now has 140k on it. Original everything outside of filters, fluids, pads, tires, battery and bulbs. Still drives excellent.

Also figured out how much I’ve spent on the car since I bought it new On July 19th 2010. Some figures I couldn’t recall exactly so they are estimated
$35640 total of payments
$15750 in gas (that’s 140k miles divided by 28mpg then figuring I’ve paid an average of $3.15 per gallon)
$550 engine oil
$176 engine oil filters
$1340 2 sets of tires
$80 brake pads
$65 K&N air filter and 1 recharge kit
$150 CVT fluid
$40 CVT filter
$90 battery
$50 coolant for flush
$300 headlights (total shot in the dark here)
$256 wiper blades
$6500 insurance ($65 a month for 100 months)
-$4900 Money I got when my car was totaled. (Was actually $5900 but it cost $990 to buy it back)
Grand total of
$56,087 ($60987 if you exclude the money I got back from insurance)
So per mile it’s cost me .40 cents per mile (43.5 cents if you exclude the insurance payout).

I’m sure I forgot a thing or two in there. I didn’t include license tabs since I honestly don’t recall what they were. Totally worthless info? Perhaps. Maybe someone will find it interesting.

Replaced the broken upper shock absorber mount. Turns out the lower shock mount really did not appreciate the 15 KMs ride back home two weeks ago. I'm lucky the brake line wasn't damaged with the shock absorber moving all over the place.

Image

I was expecting the last bolt to snap since the lower shock mount was only being held in place by that one single bolt. Guess I was wrong  . Oh well, nothing lost. It needed to be replaced anyway because there was a huge crack in it (below my middle finger).

The car's extremely smooth now, guess I won't have to replace the upper controls arms at the back like I was planning to.

I find it very interesting. My company is getting ready to do away with company cars, so I'm facing the prospect of providing a car for them and being reimbursed at some number that an accountant in a box has dreamed up. I find this sort of thing fascinating.

I forgot to include the serpentine belt. It was $27 so add 0.00019 cents per mile

Welcome to my world.
I've been using my personal car for work for the last decade. It's one of the reasons why I'm keen on a very reliable car that is easy to maintain at a low cost yet comfortable and safe. The Kizashi fit the bill nicely for a great value. While in DC, I was reimbursed about 56 cents a mile. Here, in California, it comes to about 54 cents a mile. While the DC region had lower fuel prices, the total of miles driven was less due to the higher density of the smaller urban region. Here in CA, the reimbursement rate is lower with higher gas prices but you're logging more miles and getting reimbursed a higher sum on average.

Today....put the battery tender on it.... since it's been sitting comfortably in the garage for the last 3 weeks or so, safe from the pre-holiday accident spree madness

I had to replace the car battery today, which surprised me. My Interstate battery from Costco was still under the 42 month warranty period. Last night, when I left my brother's house, the car started very slowly as if the battery was weak. It was the first time it had done that. I then drove home about 15 miles, mostly on the freeway. This morning, it failed to start (ambient temperature in the 50's). I got a ride to Costco after I pulled the old battery and it was replaced at a minimal cost given the battery number is now different. It used to be 27 and now it's 23 with a nominal difference in price. They appear to have the same specs. I paid a difference of about $2 for the new battery.

The Interstate battery in my Subaru Impreza lasted about 10 years so to see this one fail at about 3.5 years was a shock though the cars were largely driven in different climates and conditions. I hope this replacement lasts longer.

My diesel pickup requires 2 batteries. If one goes bad it’s best to replace both. First set of replacement batteries lasted about 11 months before one went bad again. Those were Walmart brand. Replaced them with Costco Interstates as well. That was 1.5 years ago. Sometimes you get a good one. Sometimes a bad one. Sometimes you get a mediocre one which it sounds like you had.

The only batteries I've replaced for my Kizashis are fob batteries!
