snow tires

I want to buy some a extra set of rims for my gf 2012 kizashi 16inch preferred . Was wondering if it needs factory back spacing or could I go to the junk yard and grab a set of steelies. Another question is it a must to have tpms ?

There are no "cheap" wheels any longer ("cheapest steelies" I've found --universals-- cost about $70 each).
If you don't run TPMS sensors your VSC/TC don't work the same, making it hard(er) to drive straight up snowy hills.

But add the TPMS sensors.......
I've tested non-studded General Altimax Artics, Goodyear WRT Ice, and Continental ExtremeWinterContact (excellent; got 20K on them, and I think I'll get another at-least-partial snow season out of them).
When in doubt buy Bridgestone Blizzaks.

There is a bunch of junk yards around where I live didn't know if I could go grab a set of 16s with the same bolt pattern.
I will get the tpms
Also family member has a set of studded 215/70/17 would those fit in the wheel ?

They'd be too big in diameter. The stock 17" size is 215/55R17.

Mine came stock with 18s if that makes a difference.

Sorry I miss wrote that my stock rims are 18 I wanted to get 16 inch rims I meant to say the tires are 215/70/16.

If you're going for 16" rims then you want 215/60R16, for 17" it's 215/55R17. They're the factory fitted sizes that will maintain the same overall tyre diameter as your 18" 235/45R18 tyre - so your speedo will remain accurate. (Changing the overall diameter also affects braking, handling, engine gearing etc.)
You can go for other tread widths with slightly different side wall profiles - eg. 235/55R16 and 235/50R17 will also work as they're virtually identical in overall diameter.
Plug some sizes into this site and you'll get the idea.

Not to huge of difference. Speedo might be off I can live with that .Correct if im wrong

You can do:
215/60 R16
215/55 R17
235/45 R18
I suggest for snows you do the 215/60 R16 thingie.

Maybe the steel rims from a Scion Xb will work. Bolt pattern 5/114.3, not sure about the offset tho. Scion Xb peeps like to change out their rims. I'm always dumping steelies from them here.
