Hey all. I've been trying to upgrade the firmware on my Kenwood. It's currently at 1.1.0. I've burned several discs, both DVD and CD, with different software and different ways. No matter what I try, Disc Error comes up. Any ideas? This topic doesn't seem to be covered very much anywhere. Yes, a burned CD with music will play, though the disc is a different brand. Could that be an issue?

Anyone?? I tried a different brand of CD, and that didn't work, either. Does anyone know if the whole extracted folder should be on it, or just the update file that's in the folder?

Don't have the nav, but according to this PDF I found, you have decompress (unzip) the file after you download it, and then burn the files that are in the zip to disc.

I assume you're trying to update to version 1.4.0? The doc is hella vague. You might be best off just trying to call Kenwood customer support. Otherwise, my next suggestion is going to be to just try burning both files from the zip to a disc and seeing if that works. The doc also points out that you HAVE to use a CD-R/RW or a DVD-R/RW disc to get the update to work.

I also found this neat page that describes the media types that can go in the nav and the file system limitations of the USB media. Doesn't directly apply to your issue, but it seems informative.

Tried all of that. Nothing worked. No matter what I try, I get the Disc Error message. I've tried placing the whole decompressed folder on the disc, as well as just the firmware file by itself. Neither works.

Can you post a link/pic of the CD's/DVD's that you're using? Something that shows the brand and type of CD?

I'm using the plain jane Verbatim CD-R. It's nothing fancy or special. It's not an RW. I also tried the Imation DVD-R disc with no success. I also tried LightScribe discs with no success. I've literally wasted at least 10 blanks attempting to do this.

The last thing I can think of is to try burning the files to a legit CD-R/RW. I know it sounds silly, but apparently CD formats are more different than they probably should be. When a manufacturer "recommends" using a particular format, it's usually more of an order than a suggestion.

That and you're using some program like ImgBurn to burn the files to disc right? Not just copy/pasting them?

If that doesn't work, I'm all outta ideas, besides straight-up calling Kenwood. Good luck!

I'm not sure what you mean by "legit" disc. Every brand I've tried has been a name brand. I've always had the worst luck with DVD-Rs made be Memorex back when I was burning a lot of DVDs.

I use a Mac. I tried "burn to disc" from the Finder, which usually always gets the job done, and I've tried burning with Roxio's Toast Titanium as Media. In either case, neither just copies/pastes. They both write lead-in, burn, verify disc and finalize.

This isn't really a huge issue for me, as I'm planning to replace it eventually, but I figured I'd at least install updates in the meantime.

You're earlier post said you were using Verbatim CD-R discs. What I was implying was that CD-R and CD-R/RW discs are NOT interchangeable. The RW part means "Re-Writable", which is significantly different from the CD-R discs that you're using, which can only be burnt once. The RW discs and be burnt multiple times however.

The spec from Kenwood suggested using specifically CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW discs doing updates. I know it seems arbitrary, but the discs are physically different somehow, and it's possible that's why Kenwood specifically mentions using RW discs.

Here's a neat page from Verbatim that kinda explains at a somewhat vague level the difference between their CD-R, and CD-R/RW discs: http://www.verbatim.com/subcat/optical-media/cd/

Something I didn't realize about RW discs is (according to Verbatim) that they won't work in regular CD players. I'm hoping the Kenwood head unit can tell the difference between the CD-R and CD-R/RW discs, and it tries to read CD-R discs just for music, and tries to read CD-R/RW discs just for updates. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So the last thing I want you to try is to find some discs that say "CD-R/RW" on the packaging, and burn the update files to one of those. On the bright side, the RW discs can be reused a 1000 times, so you can try burning the files a few different ways and you won't have to trash a disc after each attempt.
