So, a few days ago my sub started rattling/buzzing in the middle of a song and is progressively getting worse. Now, I'm fairly certain the cone has cracked, but I've been searching everywhere for a guide showing how to manually remove the sub and cannot find one anywhere, and therefore can't actually check. I am considering upgrading to a more powerful sub, but the one I have now is pretty good, so still on the fence about that.

I guess, my main question here is does anyone know how to remove the sub unit/rear parcel cover so I can check what's causing the rattle? I have a Kizashi XLS Australian model.

My second question would be, if i were to install a different system, could I fit a sub bigger than 8 inches (my current sub)?

There's a very common problem with these sub drivers which can be fixed easily. There's a dust cover glued to the center of the cone which comes loose and rattles around making horrible buzzing noises. It's completely cosmetic and can be thrown in the trash with no consequence. Remove the rear deck and it's easily accessable, you'll find a small Yarmulke looking thing bouncing around inside the speaker cone.

Okay, more specific. I can't actually figure out how to remove the rear parcel cover. If it's completely obvious, I've missed it.

I've never removed it for the Kizashi, but in many cars, it's the rear baby seat anchor bolts that also keep the rear parcel cover in place. Lift the plastic covers near the rear headrests and look for bolts that hold the anchor and cover in place. You may have to also lower the rear seats.

There is a service manual available on the forum which should tell you exactly how to disassemble the rear to remove the speaker.

I've tried the service manual and it gives me nothing to work with. All I've managed to find was I've removed the little plastic bolts but all that does is allow me to lift it slightly. I cant actually access the top of the sub.

I've already tried that, but I'm assuming this service manual is a copy of an original interactive PDF file. Hence pressing it does nothing, it's not a link, both on mobile and laptop.

I don't remember any specifics, it was four years ago, but I also don't remember there being anything particularly tough about it. But I take apart things I've never seen before as my job, so I may have an unfair advantage.

Fold down the seatback and open the trunk. Lay in the trunk with a flashlight, looking up, and study what is coming through the metal partition from above. Every single thing you see has some purpose. Speakers and their wiring and mounting screws, lights and their wiring and mounting screws (third brake light and trunk light). Everything else you can see is most likely some sort of retainer for the cover.

There may be screws going into plastic inserts which stay in the metal of the partition.

Giant plastic thumbtacks with ribs on the shaft part that just pull straight out, these are called Christmas Trees.

Plastic rivets with a small circle in the middle of the head, on these you push in the center button about 1/8th inch and then pry straight up. Sometimes you have to pry the center portion up and then the whole rivet up

Or there may be hooks molded into the bottom of the cover, so that you have to slide the cover forward or backward to release them. Actually, there's a window in the way of sliding it backward, so I guess that's out.

You'll need a long straight screwdriver to get under the panel to the area of the retainer and pry up. The proper tool for this looks like a dandelion digger, but buying a tool for this single job would be a little bit over the top. Giant screwdriver or small crowbar is almost the same thing.

It's possible that you have to take out the "C Pillar" covers on the two sides of the window because the rear deck cover goes underneath them.

Thanks, Woodie. Would you also know how to remove the C pillar cover? That's the main thing I'm having difficulty with.

I'd rather not go to a dealer and pay $100 just to find out the removable cap has come loose.
