Hill start assist?

I have the 2012 FWD SDLX CVT.
When I pull away from a stop on an incline, I can feel something like the handbrake momentarily gripping, and then releasing. Is this the CVT, or is it a system that uses the brakes? I have tried it on really steep inclines, where it will hold the car for about 3 seconds before the car starts rolling back. Applying brakes, and releasing them gets the assist system in play again, until I touch the accelerator and pull away.
