Hello all!

Hello all. I'm a new owner of a 2012 Kizashi S AWD with 59k miles. I'm really happy with the car and already some some new tires and rims planned for it. Anyways, I have some questions:
1. I only have one key fob. I know to get another I will have to get it reprogrammed by a dealer. I have a dealer willing but told me to get the fob myself as it would be cheaper. Now, I know ebay has some for around $60, but wouldn't a Nissian altima fob work as well?

2. Since I only want the second FOB as a spare couldn't I just leave it in the house with no battery in it until I ever needed to use it so the battery doesn't go dead as quick, or will the programming somehow become lost even though it should be stored in ROM, not RAM.

Thanks guys for the help, Bobby.

As far as the battery going dead in the spare I wouldn't worry about it. I've had my Kizashi for over 7 years now. My wife has my spare. I used it about a week ago. No issue. Original battery.

Someone more educated on the fobs then me will chime in soon I'm sure about the Nissan fob. Enjoy your new car man. Welcome to the forum.

When I bought my ex-Kizashi, it only came with one key fob. I found on eBay an uncut key fob for $50. It cost another $127 to cut and program it at my local Nissan/Suzuki dealer.

I'm pretty sure that you're programming the car to recognize that particular fob. The ID is permanently programmed into the fob. That being said, the battery lasts five or six years and it's a standard CR2032. I keep them in stock, all sorts of things use them.

Thank you all for the responses. I did just buy the fob off ebay for $60 and called it good. I was was hoping to save some money with the nissian version but I really don't want to get one and have it not work.. Also, thank you guys for all of the responses and information. I'm glad to see that when I have any questions you all will be able to point me in the correct direction. :) Nice to see a helpful forum again.

By the way, if you have a dead battery in your fob. you can still start the car by holding the fob right up to the start button. It uses near field communications (NFC) when the battery is dead. I've tested it with no battery and the car will still start. Your worst nightmare is to have no fob at all so a spare is essential. Good planning picking one up.

When recently trying to use the key from one of my fobs its plastic disintegrated.

When I first got my SLS, one of the fobs had several cracks in it. I bought one off of eBay and switched the guts out.
What part disintegrated? The part on the key or the fob itself?

Both the 'top' of the key, and the fob-slot area crumpled.
