Anybody know what the two plastic boxes on either side of the hose connecting the air filter box and the throttle body are?

WAG: air-flow management (image driving fast and having the vehicle hit with a huge gust of wind, causing a low-pressure area around the air intake, potentially causing the motor to stuck vacuum).......?

My understanding is that they are intake silencers to reduce intake noise. Having once installed a conical K&N type intake filter in a previous car (thereby removing one of these silencers), I can say that you'll hear a lot more of the intake noise by modifying the original intake, even at idle. The factory engineers work to make not only the exhaust quiet but also the intake. My experience with just modifying an intake showed that power gains were nominal, but it enhanced the noise and in my opinion, the engine revved faster and harder.
However, that was a mod for back then and I wouldn't do it now, especially for a car like the Kizashi in which I enjoy the refinement for the value.

Air intake suppressor/silencer was not what I was expecting... Ugliest mufflers ever.

It's a resonance chamber of some kind, put there to tune the sound of the intake. It's crazy some of the things you'll find. Here's one off a Wagon-R:

The G13BB in a Metro or Swift has a weird tube coming off the intake tube that just ends in a dead end after ten inches or so. It's the S shaped thing in the lower left corner of this photo:

The G13BA in a slightly older Metro/Swift has one has looks for all the world like a fan driven ram air system, it's just an empty box. Just to the left of the white sticker that says suzuki in this photo:
