Updating GPS problem

Every time I try to update my GPS in my car it doesn't 
I follow the instructions from the website but all it does is say connect it to the car/computer to update and follow the instructions
When I put the SD card in the head unit no instructions come up and all it says is it is ready to connect to my computer and download the update
When I download the update from the computer it says to put it in the car
So around and around it goes and no updating is applied
Can anyone help?
My head unit is a Garmin Express.
