I have been researching about window tinting around my area. Went to 4 car shops and most of them charge around $200 to $300. Which is a lot for my budged. Besides not knowing much about their quality of work is hard to make a descision. Also I have noticed that they push people to have illegal tinting. Here in Illinois the legal tint is 35% all around. There are other legal combinations. But the sellers are pushing me to have 20% and they are saying "don't worry cop will not stop you" . Why they do that?

Since they don't care if i get a ticket or not, I lost confidence on them, I don't think they really care about their quality and professionality. So I am desciding to do the tinting my self.

In my research and going throught a bunch of youtube videos about how to get this job done. It looks like pretty simple. The total cost in material and the installation kit is around $60 so the saving against having it installed is pretty significant. I don't care if I mess it up as long as I can take it off.

Is there any tips you can give me before I start my project?

The big problem with doing it yourself is finding the high quality film - stick to Lumar or Johnson. The Gila stuff sold to DIYers is crap.

Personally, I stay away from the dye based, going for the metallic versions.

Be paranoid OCD anal about cleanliness - no dust anywhere.

I just completed my tining. It took me a couple of days due to weather and a couple of wasted rolls but the job is done.

Not the most professional look. Few bubbles due to dirt as you said but it will do it in the mean time. Not bad for my first tinting. The imperfections are barely noticeable. Learned a lot from the process and saved around $200 which I can use to invest on some other improvements.
