Kizashi considered "Total Depreciation Disaster" by NADA

In an article by Car and Driver, the NADA (National Automobile Dealers Association) put out a list of the vehicles with the highest resale values and the models with the worst. The Kizashi made it on the list, but not in a good way. It predictably ranked among the very worst cars for resale value, retaining an average of only 32% after 3 years. Also on the list were other Suzukis, being the SX4 and the Grand Vitara. It's obvious that the orphan status of these Suzukis greatly affects their resale value, despite their good technical record for things like reliability and low cost of ownership.
Hence, while I am a huge fan of Suzukis, I am typically on the side of abandoning the car if some major issue comes up like a catastrophic CVT failure. While some other Kizashi fans may be irked by my position, it's pretty much because of this. It's financially ill-advised to spends thousands fixing something that is worth very little on the market.
However, this is also why I'm on the side of Kizashi owners without major problems keeping their cars long term and driving them until "the wheels fall off". This way, you get the most out of the intrinsic value of the Kizashi without worrying about resale value. The low resale value also makes them excellent buys in the used car market. It's a technically-great car for low money and a good alternative to Subarus which tend to be overpriced on the used market. After all, the Impreza and the XV Crosstrek are in the list for top resale value. In fact, I got my Kizashi as a better-value alternative to a Subaru.

I've never given depreciation or resale value one second of thought. I buy cars for me, not for the next guy.

Ditto...

I buy to keep long term. IF I have to unload a vehicle due to me being an idiot and purchasing a total POS, I lose. The Rubicon I'd unloaded prematurely for the Kizashi was 'perceived' as a high resale value item, the engine in it was a POS and I didn't lose out. I guarantee whoever bought it sure as hell did. The Kizashi, being one of the absolute best vehicles I've ever owned, will remain with me for a very long time or until some catastrophic event renders it useless. It currently owes me nothing except the joy of driving it pretty much everyday. Wife loves her SX4 as well and has requested to be buried in it.

I agree that it's financially unwise to dump 7,8,9 grand for a new CVT into any vehicle. Should my Kizashi go belly up for some unfortunate reason, I'm going to pull a Tim and hunt down the lowest-mileage 2013 that I can find and capitalize on that wonderfully depreciated value.

I can't complain - the quick depreciation is how I was able to afford one in the first place.

I think most of us agree that the low resale value and depreciation was a good thing for us used car buyers. I got mine very lightly used for a very good deal and that was even before the Suzuki bail out. While the resale value sucks, I agree with Woodie that one should buy a car (especially a used one) for themselves and not worry about resale value unless a sale is planned in the near future.
With the features and characteristics of the Kizashi combined with its low price on the market, it really makes for an excellent value for someone looking to get a good, enjoyable used car.
