Here is a very simple modification that makes your trunk swing open by itself. You simply add extension utility springs that connect the trunk hinge to the rear deck. When the trunk is closed, the springs will be stretched (under tension). When you pop the trunk, the springs will pull on the hinge, opening the trunk lid.

You can find the extension springs in hardware stores in the "door repair" sections for ~$4/pair. I had the springs sitting around so I don't know their specs. You could use one spring if the tension is right.

The spring on the left is 43mm long, 2mm wire diameter, 16.7mm outer diameter. The spring on the right is 40.4mm long, 2.8mm wire diameter, 17.2mm outer diameter. Note that using two of the springs on the right was way too strong! I had to use the weaker spring (left) to reduce the tension. On the other hand, two of the weaker springs was not strong enough to open the trunk fully.


Connect the back of the trunk hinge bracket (where the torsion bar sits) to the closest hole on the rear deck. Make sure you attach the spring to the actual hinge bracket (painted part) and not the torsion bar (black bar). The spring should NOT slide around. The spring should be under minimal tension when the trunk is open but it shouldn't be loose. Result:

Pretty sweet! Might have to give it a try. I don't think the in-laws will miss a couple springs from the sofa-bed...

Nice! The only thing I'd be worried about is the amount of force now hitting the stoppers for the trunk. I've actually seen trunks hit the rear glass when a good wind caught them.

Good. I need another reason for me to start utilizing my keyfob buttons more now that I changed the batteries in said keyfobs.

Great mod. Just did it myself. Found part in Home Depot for under $5 dollars. Not sure if this was mentioned but two sets are needed for this to work the way it was described. Thanks again for sharing, just awesome!
