Octane at altitude

The owner's manual says to use 87 octane, but would it be okay to use 85 at altitude? Would performance or MPG be affected? I've heard for every 1000ft of altitude you can decrease 1 octane level. Thoughts or experience with different octane levels at altitude?

Yes.

Snce there is less oxygen, there is less propensity to detonate, so you can get along with lower octane
