Pennzoil has a $10 rebate for 5qts of Pennzoil Platinum oil. What do you guys think of this synthetic oil made from natural gas? They call it Pure Plus.

Great oil. It's better than Mobil 1 from the analyses I've seen so you can't go wrong if the price is right.

I currently use it in my Kizashi

I actually just bought some last weekend. The $10 coupon is a mail-in rebate so they count on people being too lazy to do it. In comparison, I love Costco's instant rebates taken at the register when you buy the item. I got $10 off at the register last time I bought Mobil 1 at Costco (why I'm using it).

Pennzoil Platinum is a great oil. Pennzoil Ultra is the better version in which Pennzoil claims it has advanced cleaning and friction-reducing properties. Since the introduction of Ultra, Pennzoil has claimed Ferrari uses the oil. Quite impressive given Ferrari are a bunch of fanatical engine builders who even have indoor trees growing in the factory to "balance the humidity and create the perfect temperature" for engine assembly. If Pennzoil Ultra is good enough for these guys, it's good enough for just about any engine.

Regarding the "Pure Plus" name change. I've seen it come about with the claim that their Platinum and Ultra are now made from Natural Gas. This is what Pennzoil had to say regarding the topic on a Q&A on BITOG.

Q: How is the new “with PurePlus” formula different from the older Platinum that is currently on sale?

A: Pennzoil Platinum® Full Synthetic motor oil with PurePlus™ Technology is a first-of-its kind synthetic motor oil blended with a pure, crystal-clear base oil made from natural gas. PurePlus base oil has fewer of the impurities found in crude oil, the start for many other traditional and synthetic motor oils. The difference is in the base oil, which makes up 75%-90% of a typical motor oil formulation. Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic products use 100% PurePlus Base Oils.

I personally like Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra a lot. I too consider it superior to Mobil 1 (current blend). I switched to Mobil 1 in my last oil change because of the discount at Costco. I'm now experiencing rougher idle, more engine noise, and increased oil consumption with Mobil 1 compared to Pennzoil Ultra. While I don't think Mobil 1 is a bad oil, it seems to me that the Kizashi's J24B engine runs smoother on Pennzoil synthetic oils.

I got Platinum Pure Plus this time because Walmart did not have Ultra in stock.
If you're think about using Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra, rest assured that these oils are excellent choices. I change my oil about every 7500 miles in "severe" conditions with these oils. I also use a high quality oil filter (Mobil 1, K&N, Bosch Distance Plus, and the like.)

The 2014 Wrangler I just bought calls out for it by name in the owners manual as the recommended oil. Bought a jug w/ the mail in rebate and an additional quart.

I have used Pennzoil Platinum before and was impressed but wondered about the "Pure Plus" part of using natural gas as the base oil. I know there are different grades of base oils used in making synthetic oils. I wonder where the "Pure Plus" base oil falls in the ranking of oils used in premium synthetic oils.

I'm no chemist nor engineer, but it sounds to me that Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra with PurePlus still fall under the API Class III category of motor oils.
Class IV are classified by the base of PAOs (Polyalphaolefins).
Class V are classified by the base of Esters.

The only thing on the shelf from Pennzoil, in that weight, was the new stuff made from natural gas...whatever they call it.
