A Golf R is $56700 drive away locally- I'd expect the Civic Type R to be up in that region. (above $50k)

The last non turbo Civic Type R was around $42000 drive away - from memory.

I would expect the new Type R to be similar in pricing as the old model. Regardless, I didn't realize how much the Type R costs. We only have the SI here which is similarly priced as a GTI

How much is a GTI in Australia?

It's $53,200 driveaway for the GTI Performance (DSG only) and $46,400 for the manual and $49k for DSG GTi.

The new Type R is at a whole new level than the previous version (both in power output and chassis differences to normal Civics). That rarely comes without a price increase. It's also been a few years since it was previously sold here (in 2011.)

It would now easily be equivalent to models like the RenaultSport Megane 275 Trophy R with 201kW (starting at $50k driveaway for the base model, up to $58k for the 201kW LE model).

I know it's the favored hot hatch but I can't get my head around a 40K turbo Civic that doesn't offer AWD like the competition. The Si is FWD so it would seem to make more sense to have the Type-R have AWD even if it doesn't suffer from performance traction issues. You also pay only for the performance. I've sat in a Type-R and was quite discouraged by the cheap interior that was noticeably lower grade than my Kizashi which is 10 years older. The car screams boy racer but bring mama's cash.

I'm a bit bummed out by the face that it still says 'concept' on it though :(
