They're not designed to run better on lower octane gas; they're just able to adjust timing enough to be able to run at all on regular.

I live at high elevation (4500+ ft). Due to lower ambient air pressure, you can utilize a lower octane with no performance reduction or knocking.

Here, 85 is the standard octane (with 87/89 as mid grade, 91 as high-grade).
