Im Gutted- 3 weeks into ownership..

I'm 2 months into owning mine, 3500k's on the clock...started at 8.3ltrs/100ks dropped to 8.2 then has gradually climbed to 8.5/100ks. Not driving too madly, and doing regular 20k drives at 80-100kph and a little town driving... Hoping it'll work it's way down again as it wears in! Don't know whether a chat to local Suzuki guys would be of any help.
What's considered a run in period anyway?

The first 700 miles (~1126km) is considered a break-in period for the engine. It's discussed in the owner's manual. It's important to take it easy with the engine in this period and not rev the engine into red line. Also, engines are typically not as efficient during this period. It should get better with time. I personally don't know from experience because I always buy used, but I have read from many sources (different cars too) that efficiency is better once break-in is complete. In fact, I would say after the first few thousand miles, the engine should be better with power and efficiency.

I have been pretty dissapointed in my MPG also...I have found that traffic and hills absolutely KILL this cars efficiency. I just drove about 70 miles on the highway and got almost 30 mpg. I got stuck in traffic at my destination and by the time I got ready to come back home my MPG was down to 26. I know all cars are inefficient in town (except for hybrids)...so...it is what it is. I just have to get used to 22-24 MPG on my average tank of fuel.

With winter here and snow tires our fuel milage is routinely in the 26-27 range. That is me figuring it out by hand. In the summer with regular tires It's more like 29-30.
Commute is probably pretty close to 50-50.

X2 - pretty much either take it easy or rag the piss out of it

I will be going on a road trip in a week, will be using cruise control on highway the whole way and see what kind of mileage I get. I can never seem to get over 23 mpg on highway for some reason. In city I get prob get around 24ish

Three things to consider.
(i) Are you sure that the pumps are accurate? A recent show on TV in Australia, pointed out the a significant number of pumps are under-reading, in spite of being "regularly regulated and tested". Also temperature can play a big part.
(ii) Dont be swept off your feet by claimed/advertised consumption. I understand it is done in a laboratory, using the equivalent of a four foot midget driver, (naked and shaved), with tyres pumped up to extreme levels etc! (I am being a little facetious here). The companies will put everything they can in their favour. Hyundai are paying out big time for being found out. Bottom line, the "normal/average" driver will never get what the car companies claim.
(iii) I have anecdotal evidence, in my own case, that it takes about 5000 k to "free" the engine up.

Your car is still a young pup and not out of the break in period. Your fuel efficiency should get better once you have more miles.
