I did some testing today and was astounded at the temperature difference.

In the front cabin light I left the previously pictured Cree Q5 T10 LED bulb in one map light and fitted a 5 Watt T10 standard type incandescent bulb in the other (I did have 8 Watt T10's in my box of "spares", but went with the lower Wattage. The difference in brightness was huge - a clear win to the LED- so perhaps the 8 Watt incandescent is standard fit?)

I checked the plastic cover of the map light lense on both after 5 minutes for the temperature rise.
Start temperature : both lense ~21 degrees C (within 1 degree of each other)
Temp after 5 min: LED 22.3 C , Incandescent 25.8 C

I attempted to measure the actual bulb temperature, but due to the "glass envelope" construction of the stock T10, the IR temperature gun was giving erroneous readings (around 45.6 C) compared to LED 31.2 C . I tried to remove the incandescent and it was too hot to hold.... My IR temp gun has adjustable emissivity (compensates for different materials IR) but specifies "plate glass" - ie. a flat sheet, not the rounded bulb shape. So I assume that was the problem as 45.6 C would not have made me pull my fingers out of there that quickly!

For the reversing light I refitted a stock 21W P21 bulb and left the other previously posted Cree Q5 bulb in the other light.

Tail Light Reversing Lens ambient: LED 19.4 C , Incandescent 20.4C
After 5 mins : LED 20.2 C , Incandescent 27.2 C
Bulb metallic base temp (after 5 minutes operating in tailight) : LED 65.1 C , Incandescent 177.4 C <- no, NOT a typo!

So there you go.....

I didn't bother testing any of the 5050 LED type replacements - they generate hardly any heat at all (and I'd risk cosmetic damage to those light fittings removing the plastic lens cover for access.)

The ones you linked to earlier contain Osram LED's but the light assembly itself isn't actually made by Osram. The temperature they reach would come down to whatever type of current driver circuit they're using to drive the LED's and how hard it is driving them. 6 Watts is a lot of power/ heat to try and dissipate from such a small festoon bulb- IMHO it's more likely the maximum rated power the LED's can handle and not what they're being run at. (There's a lot of "creative" advertising in regards to LED bulbs.)

They might not even be using anything more than a simple resistor to limit the current? The description certainly doesn't mentioned any driver circuit being incorporated. With the higher power LED's eg. Cree variations (or the Osrams you've got) it's essential to use a constant current driver as the "12 Volt" supply will go up to well over 14Volts. That will quickly kill high power LED's through the current increasing.

There's also obviously a big limit on space for incorporating proper LED drivers into automotive bulbs.

I haven't used any Cree R5 auto bulbs.

I just bought one of these.. highly doubt it makes anything more than half of the claimed 800lm but 400 is still quite high

If you want high light output in torches, search for Cree XM-L T6 versions. I've also got some MC-E Cree torches that are pretty impressive ( dx.com is a good site to drool over.)

How the hell do you get the incandescent ones out of the front dome and map lights?

You need to carefully lever the covers off with a small flat bladed screwdriver. (Some insulation tape wrapped around the screwdriver tip will help prevent trim damage.)

No, that part was easy - how to actually remove the bulb so I could put in the new ones.

Ended up pulling the overhead, removing the bulb holders from the back, and then removing the bulbs from the holders with vice grips.

Wiggle them and they will pull out. I don't recall them being difficult to pull out?

PS: thanks for the info on the other thread regarding the vanity mirror LEDs. I'll add it into the first post.

They didn't for me - I was wiggling them all over! Even when I got the holders out of the cars, it still took tools!
