Got a notice about a recall caused by spiders. Apparently a spider can get into an air line and cause the gas tank to crack. Never thought I'd have to get something fixed due to a spider!

Here are more details:
Advisory details
On certain vehicles, a particular type of spider may weave a web in the evaporative canister vent line which may cause a restriction in the line. If this occurs, the fuel tank pressure may become excessively negative when the emission control system works to purge the vapors from the canister. As the canister is purged repeatedly during normal operation, the stress on the fuel tank may eventually result in a crack causing a fuel leak. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire causing injury and/or property damage.
Correction: Dealers will inspect the canister vent line and replace it with a line containing a filter. If a web is found in the old line, the fuel tank will also be replaced.

It's actually not the first time spiders have caused issues like these.kizashigal wrote:Got a notice about a recall caused by spiders. Apparently a spider can get into an air line and cause the gas tank to crack. Never thought I'd have to get something fixed due to a spider!

So the "yellow sac spider" is to blame. There's a bit more on it here- it is actually attracted to the smell of fuel http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/ ... CP20110304
That family of spiders seem to have a world wide distribution, but I bet North America will be the only recall.

Here's a couple of sites that confirm they are in Australia (also known as "Long Legged Sac Spider")

These spiders also seem to want a fun ride. They seek out fun-to-drive midsize family sedans like the Mazda6 and the Kizashi and don't target cars like the Camry.
Not even these spiders buy that "grounded to the ground" Camry nonsense.

I had a spider problem on a Ford a few years back. They clogged the vent tube at the fuel filler. Gassing up, it was difficult because the air pressure in the filling tank would stop the fuel nozzle.

As Murcod wrote, it looks like the yellow sac spider is found all over the world.bootymac wrote:They don't appear to be prevalent in the Pacific Northwest
Below is the link to the wiki page on this spider and it explicitly states that this spider genus is found in parts of British Columbia, Canada.

They are found in just about every market in which members from this forum hail from so looks like we should all be somewhat concerned about these possible arachnid passengers in our Kizashis.
In fact, I think I've seen one running around my dash not too long ago. I didn't mind it as I don't fear nor kill spiders, but it looked quite like the description of the spider in the wiki page. Maybe he was looking to get high off of gas fumes.
I'm trying to find a recall notice online for us non-original owners to reference at the dealer, much like what I did with the rear shock TSB.
All I can find is the Canadian notice that's found in Bootymac's first post which actually looks like a government PSA and not even something from Suzuki themselves.

On a more serious note, these spiders look like the following. The one I've seen running around in my Kizashi (I've also seen them in my previous Mazda3) was roughly the same size as in the picture.
We definitely have these spiders in the Mid-Atlantic USA.
