Hi all,

I have had a grinding/whirling noise from the engine bay for a month or so during cold starts. It seems to be coming from the area around the belts and pulleys, so I just took the serpentine belt off and started spinning the pulleys by hand. Both the smooth and grooved idler pulleys had some noise and play in them, so I’m hoping that is where the noise I’m hearing is coming from and would like to replace them both.

The grooved pulley the top of the engine is easy to remove as it is just a hex bolt. However the smooth one below that looks to have a cover on it with no visible hex bolt? How do I remove that pulley?

I also replaced the tensioner about 6 months ago as I started to hear a squeaky noise when at idle. Thanks to Old Techs detailed post on how to do it.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

I attached a pic with the pulley circled.

It's just a cap that snaps on and off. Under it, a bolt and it's similar to the other idler pulley underneath that cap.
