Probably transmission fluid, it's basically oil too. You should get an idea from which side it is, engine is on the right, transmission is on the left. That sounds as if the button itself is not working. Disconnect every connector at the base of the steering column and reconnect them. Sometimes problems like this are just poor electrical connections.
