I change my own oil , been doing it for several years on many many different cars. You can only insure a job well done by doing it yourself. Quick lube places are the source of many horror stories including wrong filters being replaced and having fluids drained and not filled. Overfilling and underfilling are also issues. Loose oil filters are also a concern. Had a roommate have a filter spew oil all over the engine bay due to an oil filter loosely installed by some quick lube place. I sometimes find sloppy work done by dealership techs like using the wrong bolts, etc. After all, it's not their car so why would they care so much?
As for the synthetic causing the noise, I am not sold on that. I will pay attention when I switch over to syn at next oil change. Was it making noise before the oil change? Sludge from the old oil could have gummed up oil galleys in the engine parts. I imagine that the engine might have some sludge in it because of the old oil. For this reason, you should use synthetic to clean it out. Pennzoil Ultra is well regarded for cleaning out sludge, but all syn oil do a decent job.
If it's real bad, I would use Auto-RX. Google it. It gets raved about at bitog.com. I've used it a few times on my old Impreza and it was running strong with over 200,000 miles. Not some automotive snake oil according to the nuts at bitog. I have no complaints either.

My thoughts exactly KuroNekko.

For example, I didn't touch my mother's Kia, let the dealership to their thing.... and they destroyed the transmission.

Once I saw and drove the Kizashi however, I thought, no way will I let the idiots mess with this beauty!

Little did I know they already had.

I should have changed the oil the first day I saw it, but I trusted that a dealership would NEVER let something like that happen....

Yes, unfortunately, I thought the engine sounded ticky and louder to me right after the oil change. I figured it washed out all the sludge and exposed the damage. It's 3 hours away from me again, but I wish it was closer so I could hear how things are. I'm so worried about the possible internal damage and wear that worn out oil could have caused....

And I have to worry about the warranty because for about 2 1/2 weeks after my mom got her car, she complained that it would surge while on cruise control. Sure enough I drove it for 3 hours and like clockwork, the motor would rev 500 RPM about once every 2 minutes (you could watch the Tach show it)... went to a dealership up here, and of course it completely stopped on the way there.... and hasn't done it again for the last 2 months. But I just read another thread about getting the whole transmission replaced because of that exact problem.... oh boy.

Anyway, thanks for the tip on Auto-RX, I'll look it up.

It's a shame really that I do the right thing by changing the oil and I have to worry about possibly voiding the warranty.... fuuuuuuuu@#

Looks like a 3 hour tour to the MORON dealership is in my future......

Its fairly well documented online (and in my own experience) that you can get extra valve train noise by using synthetic. Some people don't notice it, but if you were on edge worried about engine damage, you might be more sensitive to it.

Any knowledge of which synthetics are known to cause the noise?
I know that some engines do better with certain synthetics over others. This was apparently the case with Subaru turbo engines and Mobil 1. Some believed Mobil 1 was the cause of spun bearings in their Subaru engines.

Any dealer that says you can't work on your own car is dead wrong.

Google the Magnuson-Moss Act. One of the specific provisions in the bill is that owners may do their own service work. It's on the manufacturer to prove the work (or aftermarket parts) caused the issue. If you ever have issues with this contact your state attorney general and the Federal Trade Comission.

The important thing is to KEEP GOOD RECORDS!! This includes mileage, dates and details of work performed. Also keep receipts of parts and fluids used. Manufacturer parts are not required but if a non-oem part fails you will have issues.

Okay, I'm back.

Here's what happened...

I went to the dealership with the original oil filter in hand. My mom's car was unfortunately backed into in a parking lot, the damage wasn't all that bad and the person who did it, paid for it. The dealership was about to do the work. At the service counter I spoke to the service manager and told him what I found when I changed the oil in the Kizashi.

He immediately said all of the regular servicing was done.

I asked for proof, seeing as the service record book in the car was blank. He said no one ever fills those out. He went to the computer and sure enough, Suzuki of Newmarket (where my mom bought her car) had no records of service... BUT, he said Suzuki of Canada would have done all the servicing of the car up until the 13,000 KM (when the car was sold to my mom).

There was a Suzuki of Newmarket "Your next service is due" sticker on the windshield when my mom bought the car. The Kms indicated 19K, which would make a buyer believe that they had just done a service at 13K... which they didn't.

I pulled out the oil filter and asked if Suzuki of Canada always put paint dabs on when they changed the oil... like this (showed him the filter)

He immediately said "oh, there's English on that filter... Suzuki factory filter's only have Japanese"

The filter in my hand has Japanese, English and French, in that order, labeled 1, 2, 3.

I personally don't believe Suzuki would go to the trouble of having 'Japanese only' filters made....

I said " I really think this car fell through the cracks and has never been serviced. I think that the dealership should give my mom a free oil change at least." He said,"no."

Then he went on about an SX4 that had over 300,000 KMS on it and how these new engines are built so well... and blah blah blah. I simply said "that's great, but what if the oil had never been changed? How long would that motor last?"

Anyway, to his credit, he took a picture of the filter and said he would look into further.

My mom gave me the bill to look over after they did the work. It included a free oil change and and flush which was described as "oil and filter change, engine ran for 1/2 hour, then drained and refilled."

There was also a recall on the belt tensioner. That was replaced under warranty.

So, I haven't spoke directly to the dealership since, but the free oil change and re-fill basically means that there was no servicing done to this car for the first 20,000 KMS.

A lesson for those getting good deals on demo Kizashi's is to demand printed proof of service records. I assumed that the servicing would have been done without question... I was wrong.

Finally, I ran both my bro-in-laws and mother's Kizashi's side by side. Both engines after warm up shake a little when idling. But my mom's definitely does have a tic to it that my bro-in-laws does not. It's not overwhelming, but it's there.

I also wanted to add that the repair work done by Suzuki of Newmarket was bad.

I was just looking in the trunk of the Kizashi and noticed the trunk liner was out of place... I went to tuck it back in and the little tie down hold popped off... same thing on the other side. They broke both of them when taking out and re-installing the liner and then put some crappy glue on them to hold them in place and didn't even put the liner in right.

NICE WORK!! $1800 for repairs and this is what you do?

That's pathetic. I'm adding some pics of how they left the trunk liner and the broken retainer.

I would recommend NO ONE buys anything from Suzuki of Newmarket.

That kind of S--T really sets me off! I've posted before on here about horrible service repairs at dealers. The sad part is that this is the norm. You would think this is the kind of work you can only get at a corner garage. I've learned, my lesson with broken or damaged car parts that have been hidden intentionally, even tools left in the engine compartment. And good luck getting them to fix what they damaged. Thank god I'm capable enough to perform most maintenance, but when it does have to be touched by anyone, I go thru a full walk thru with the manager before they touch it, and then after. It's the only way to cover your ASS.

Yes, that seems to be the norm these days doesn't it? It just makes my blood boil!

-I live 3 hours away from the dealership, so I couldn't be there when my mom picked up the car. My mom is 75 years old BTW.

-Isn't that great? Suzuki of Newmarket can rip off old ladies! Congratulations you bottom feeding A$$holes.

-I was planning to never let the dealership touch the Kizashi as I do all maintenance and repairs om my own vehicles. The dealership up near where I live was the first to threaten me with voiding the warranty because I did an oil change.

-That's when I discovered that there had NEVER been an oil change.

-So, especially after my mom got in the fender bender, the dealership had to be involved.

I hoped that they could actually do something right to make up for not doing any servicing on the Kizashi. I was wrong.
