The car will roll backwards, or forward, if your foot isn't on the brakes at idle. I notice this all the time sitting at traffic lights. The hill hold keeps the car stationary, but only for a while and then it releases even if I haven't pressed the accelerator.

My 2014 Wrangler's automatic has hill hold and it works the same way. Very handy for when I'm pulling the Samurai around. The transition from brake to gas, even on a hill, is smooth and seamless. With it disabled, the weight of the Samurai pulls the Jeep backwards quickly until I get to the gas. Eliminates the lurch under accel.

Hill hold freaks me out at times because when you'd expect the car to roll backwards, it doesn't and then I'm thinking what's wrong?
