...Honda F22? Nissan KA24DE? Mitsubishi 4g63? Subaru EJ20?

Because I haven't heard a Kizashi engine brand new, I can't tell if the detailed 'sounds' I'm hearing from the engine are normal or not. It sounds like it has a lot of valvetrain noise, like my 94 Accord, but I know this wasn't normal for my Accord unless there was some wear or lubrication-related issues in the head. Makes me a bit concerned.

Then there's the smoothness. There's almost a Subaru-esque very slight 'lope' in the sound that in normal engines isn't a good thing. Again, making me a bit concerned.

So I thought the easiest way to let me know what's 'normal' and what's not is to compare it to other engines. If you've heard other engines that sounds identical to the Kizashi, please let me know what they are!

I've made the same observations.

Mine sometimes reminds me of a diesel engine. Makes that clackety noise, especially when accelerating from a stop.

And when you pop the hood, to some extent it sounds like my previous '89 Mazda 626 when the lifters were going bad.

And it's gotten worse over time. Just gets noisier and noisier...after the dealer replaced the alternator pulley, it makes a quiet oscillating noise--especially when cold. It's also developed an intermittent shuddering noise when sitting at a stoplight...again, mostly when the engine is cold.

So IDK.

Exactly! That diesel sound drives me nuts! With as well-insulated as the car is (judged from trying to hear the RF system outside the car), noise from the engine compartment worries me.

I've noticed the noises are less once the engine is warmed up. But under load during a cold start it sounds horrible! (Not horrible as in real damage, but horribly noisy for a brand new engine.)

My engine sounds nice and smooth always. No diesel noises nor Subaru-esque noises (and I've owned Subarus and have a TDI in the family). I typically only hear the fuel injectors when the car is idling and I'm inspecting the engine. While in the car, I don't hear too much from the engine unless accelerating rather hard.

Are you guys checking oil levels? What kind of oil do you guys use? I run full synthetic which is known to have better cold weather protection and better flow not to mention superior wear resistance and lubrication. Also, better oil filters have anti-drain back valves that help start-up lubrication. Since our filters are side-mounted, it's a concern and these anti-drain back valves help.

I use the some of the best motor oils and oil filters I can get my hands on and have never had lubrication-related issues in any of my engines.

My Kizashi purrs nicely like a happy black cat.

Thank you so much for the post!

The oil in mine is Mobil 1, but I'm not sure of the filter, and I believe it is overfilled. :? All of this is from the previous owner as we've barely even driven 3000 miles since we've bought it, and he had literally just changed the oil the day I test drove it.

What oils and filters are you using? Switching to what you use seems like it should bring ours closer to yours as they're the same color and seem to deal with the same type of climate.

I really need to get my ramps and a place to work on my cars here in MKE.

Mine is quiet, but I x2 the shudder - it idles rough in D, shifting to N relieves the load and it calms down

A little valvetrain noise would be normal, having solid lifters. There will always be a couple thousandths clearance vs hydrualic lifters. Suzuki uses bucket on shim, replacing shims as needed if the valves need adjusting, it's the same design they use on their bikes.

I'm currently using Pennzoil Ultra 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil. My oil filter is a Mobil 1 oil filter. I change my oil every 7500 miles or so.

I'm switching to Mobil 1 motor oil in my next oil change because I picked up a case on sale at Costco. I typically get my motor oil in 5 quart jugs at Walmart. Walmart carries the Pennzoil line up so I used to go there but there isn't a store too close to me. Walmart's selection of oil filters is also lacking. I'm going to try Mobil 1 and if I like it, I will stick with it. It's more convenient to obtain as Costco and Autozone (for oil filters) are located closer to me than Walmart.

Kuronekko:

yours is smooth and quiet because of the manual tranny

the cvts drop the rpm as low as 1200 during light to moderate acceleration and that causes the deep rumble ('diesel sound').

guys, nothing to do about it ... either drive with feather-light foot slower than a granny would or hammer it a bit :)

I was thinking this as well, but how it was discussed made it sound like the engine itself.
