I unlock the car with the key fob sit in the seat, hit the start button. Almost every tine it says to put my foot on the clutch and break, but I am already doing that. All the warning lights come on and do off one by one. and the panel says "ignition switch position". I try to press the button again does not turn over somewhere in the process I heat a soft whirring or buzz lasing about 1 second, sometimes I hear that sometimes I don`t and then I will turn ignition off and try again same thing , I try to start again numerous times. I get frustrated and turn the ignition off lock the car walk away, open the car again, same thing after many tries sometimes it sarts, says "press button to start" and it starts and runs perfectly and so smooth that at idle I can not hear or feel the engine running, I have to look at the tachometer to see if its running. I saw for the first time today "service EPS module", but have only seen that once and the car started and the warning disappeared. I am at a loss, and hope it is not something I cannot afford
I think you are having the common electronic steering lock issue . The correct fix is replacing this unit . This box is retailing near $500 plus labor to remove column to install. A used one can not be used. I have had probably 10 of these do this but I have yet to have a customer want to spend the money. The diy guys are getting car started with driver door open and disconnecting driver door switch. this keeps unit from locking column and hopefully doesnt loose continuity through starting circuit. I use the same concept but use a toggle switch. I also switch inputs from with both the left doors so the keyless start computer thinks the rear door is opening as driver gets in and still has interior light. If the esl loses continuity the toggle switch then flipped to complete circuit with LR door open and cycle the starting procedure until car starts then flipping toggle off. On the units that are really making trouble, I add an emergency override push button switch hidden in the coin box left of the steering wheel using power from brake light circuit and the starter relay command. All needed circuits can be found on the black keyless start computer just above driver left foot and a wiring diagram. in my shop this mod is $150
Until you fix the issue, I suggest keeping the door open when you try to start the car. This allows for the steering lock to "cycle" at each start and complete shut off so that an unlock is more likely successful when you try repeatedly. I also noticed that holding the steering wheel against the lock can help unlock it.
In my experience, colder weather makes the steering lock issue worse. I imagine that over time, the issue will get worse in all cars and it will necessitate the fix Old Tech mentioned. I'm trying to get by for now using the method of cycling and it works. I usually get the car started within 3 tries when the issue is present. Sometimes, the car starts perfectly fine with no steering lock issue.
