I highly recommend this route. As you already know, a single damaged wheel costs around $700, which is almost equal to the cost of a set of winter wheel and tire package from tirerack. You can also go the route I'm going and find some stock steelies to put tires on, which can drop the price even more.

As I'm sure you now realize, AWD only helps you start. For everything else, you're still at physic's mercy. I hope you're able to get everything back in working order (ps get a wheel alignment)
I read this as well when researching if we really needed awd here in MKE. AWD does help you move, but in all other areas, including handling, you're no better than fwd. The rear, even when planted with solid grip doesn't have enough braking power to stop the car when the front is sliding--it's just how all cars are designed since too much braking in the rear can cause loss of control.
