Very cool. I didn't know about this and had to read up on it: http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2007/05/03/b ... ssion-cvt/~tc~ wrote:CVT has been banned from F1 for a reason - it's too fast. The ability to better use the engine is a significant advantage.
CVT
CVT's certainly don't display that advantage in the real world.
Some of the Kizashi acceleration figures I've read seem very optimistic. eg. I can't see a manual Kizashi getting anywhere close to the 7 second area for 0-100km/h.
Edit:
It get's better!

http://www.motortrend.in/newcars/maruti ... eviews.htmWhile the manual gearbox Kizashi can do the 0-100 km/h stint in a matter of 7.8 seconds, the Kizashi with the CVT can do the same in 8.8 seconds.
Edit:

As for the sprint time, the Suzuki Kizashi can blast forward from 0-100 km/h in just 7.4 seconds.

(Sport AWD time)We timed 0-100km/h and the Honda slightly edges out in front; 8.8 seconds versus 9.1 seconds.

(CVT time)Performance, though, feels decent rather than special (Drive recorded 9.4 seconds on the stopwatch for the 0-100km/h sprint),

Maybe you're not getting the point here. The Porsche PDK is NOT a CVT. it's a manual transmission which is shifted by the car's powertrain computer.~tc~ wrote:The PDK is a DSG transmission. The Porsche training school in Georgia HEAVILY advocates leaving the PDK in "automatic" (Sport+) mode for best lap times.
CVT technology can improve both performance AND mileage. It's all in the tuning
Please, let's not go back to this fairy tale again, that's simply not true. CVT was banned because the FIA (quite rightly) wants the driver to control the car. They also banned DSG style transmissions, and launch control, and anti-lock brakes, and active suspension~tc~ wrote:CVT has been banned from F1 for a reason - it's too fast. This sentence in that "article" is total fabrication, it is not proof of anything: "There was also speculation that it had instantly proved several seconds per lap quicker than the conventional Williams". Someone writes opinion in an online blog and five years later people are quoting it as gospel.

Please explain how you chirped the tires in 2nd with the CVT. I'm curious...KuroNekko wrote:~tc~ wrote:I actually played around a bit today with accelerating hard from a stop. Shift it!
I don't own a CVT. Hence, I used theLPSISRL wrote:Please explain how you chirped the tires in 2nd with the CVT. I got it on my dash cam too.

When the PDK was initially introduced, you could get either the old Tiptronic system or the PDK or a manual. Comparisons showed the PDK was faster in track testing. The techs I knew that went to the training were blown away by the Panamera Turbo S as it would actually hang right with the Turbo 911 when outfitted with the PDK.KuroNekko wrote:I'm also a bit confused about your claim regarding the PDK. That's a dual clutch transmission, but Porsche offers that as the only automatic for their coupes. It's either the PDK or the manual and the Tiptronic is only seen in the SUVs.

I wish these people had a different set of roads to drive on and parking lots to park in.KuroNekko wrote:...the average car buyer buys a car as an appliance so factors like fuel efficiency and smoothness are valued rather high and sells the car. In this regard, it's not a surprise why CVTs have become so popular in segments such as compacts and midsizes.

You're right, that was very poorly worded. They banned the computer shifting the DSG automatically, it must be shifted by the driver.~tc~ wrote:All F1 cars are using DSG type transmissions.Woodie wrote:~tc~ wrote: They also banned DSG style transmissions, and launch control, and anti-lock brakes, and active suspension
