strange odor, and how to eliminate it
One more thought...did you by any chance get new floor mats with the car? Like the rubber OEM ones? I got mine like 3 months ago and they still have an odor...chemically/rubbery...
just a thought...

It's about the right time for the 10s of thousands of hurricane Sandy flooded cars to be finding their way all over the place and showing up redcon'd on lots for sale....just sayin'. If it smells the same bad in the trunk as in the cabin...curious.

Well, it's very chemically. Almost sweet. I drove a buddy home yesterday and he said he thought it smelled a bit like walnut. But....not remotely rotten.
I haven't replaced the mats. I am not sure but I think it might be stronger when the cabin fan is on.
I am starting to lean towards a chemical cleaning agent...meant to smell good, but used in too much quantity.
When the weather gets better here in Toronto, (now it's a rain storm....can't catch a break here) I'm going to examine the cabin air filter.
I've looked at the tutorials, and also the statement that I do not have to take the glove box off, which appears to be true. I've taken off the manual shelf off without removing the glove box, and I seem to have access to the white filter cage, but that's as far as I've gone.
I'll take out the filter, give it a look and a smell....then I'll basically keep the fan on full at all times, and when the weather gets warmer, keep the windows rolled down. Nature ought to air the sucker out. Hopefully....

If it is, is that something somebody just sprayed into the inlet vents behind the wipers, or are you suggesting it's something like a Febreeze disc actually inside the AC system, which I could remove? Seems a bit persistent for just something sprayed into the system, but you never know.CLLee wrote:Hmmm... could be those air cond disinfectant spray, or something similar.matt_gold99 wrote: I am not sure but I think it might be stronger when the cabin fan is on.
That should be easy to spot - he (she?) is in Canada so the VIN would show up as a US model.Ronzuki wrote:It's about the right time for the 10s of thousands of hurricane Sandy flooded cars to be finding their way all over the place and showing up redcon'd on lots for sale....just sayin'. I have a new suspicion.
I noticed that when I turn the fan on...without the engine running...so the incoming air is NOT being heated....there is no smell coming from the vents.
When I do this with the engine running and turn the heat up, I get a smell.
So, after a little research, I think it might be my heater core. Might have a leak.
The car is a 2011. Does anyone know if heater core repair is covered in the warranty?
If I use radiator stop-leak or the like to the radiator, does this void my warranty?

coolant level is about 75% full. so about 3/4 of the way from empty to full.
I bought the on wednesday, so I've only had it for 2.5 days.
If they filled up the coolant when they sold it to me, then it's dropped a bit.
I'll how it looks in the morning. I'm quite sure that it only smells when the heating is on.
