What Did You Do With Your Kizashi Today?

Sorry to hear about the passing of your mother, SamirD.

Our cars are aging and need more attention and care. Mine is very reliable but now approaching 100,000 miles, I'm prepping for some major service/maintenance I plan to do over the course of months. I already have replaced all four brakes, replaced the MT fluid, and bled the clutch line. Some of the other stuff coming up include replacing the coolant, serpentine belt, and tensioner among other stuff.

Wow, you've definitely got more miles than ours now. I think I just went over 85k. But it's needing a lot of the same stuff including the brakes, transmission fluid, and coolant. I haven't even thought about the belt--I should inspect that the next time I'm looking for new rust spots.

And speaking of rust spots, I did do some stuff to the kizashi on the 20th--added some oil, bled air out of the coolant system as well as topped off coolant, and fluid filmed rust spots including the hood latch.

I now live very close to my workplace and my commute is literally under a mile to work. Hence, my annual mileage should be quite lower now though I drive my personal car for the course of my work. It's nice because I get reimbursed for the mileage thus work is essentially paying for me to operate my Kizashi.

I recently took two trips to Joshua Tree National Park which is about 2.5 hours away, one way. Even within the park, it's about two hours of driving for the route I took. Given I sometimes drive out to other counties (the ones in So Cal are huge), the Kizashi's mileage will now be more for pleasure than commuting. The trips regularly remind me how nice this car is as a nimble and agile touring car. It's fun to drive in the curves yet makes for a great freeway cruiser with great fuel economy if at a steady pace around 65 to 70 MPH. On a trip back from Joshua Tree, the Kizashi was averaging 35 MPG.

Our car is in a little bit of the opposite as my wife's work was a very short distance away (to the train anyways), but now that the car is back in Alabama, it will see much more mileage as even the grocery store is further away than in Chicago. Plus with my dad's medical treatments, there will be 20mi trips regularly. So ironcally, I think our mileages will match back up again around 120k.

I still have the summer tires packed in boxes and have to fix a nail in one of them. But it will be nice to bolt on the summer tires again and have a potent braking system back under the car. It can seriously tear corners and I look forward to terrorizing the streets around here again with my driving. It would be nice if I had enough time to work on all the other cars too--I miss driving them all.

Congrats! Are you in KC, Kansas or Missouri? I didn't realize the two states basically shared the city until I drove through them on my way from Maryland to California on the I-70 in 2017.

Ordered new sneakers...Sumitomo HTR A/S P02 235/45R18 94W from Tires-Easy.com. I'm getting cheap and just don't need/want to spend a lot on cars in general anymore. We'll see how these do in comparison to the Kumhos which so far were the best set I've had from a performance and longevity perspective.

Sumitomo, my favorite brand. My wife’s A8 has been rolling on a set of sumitomos for years and still look good . This year they came out with winter tires in most of the common sizes. Sumitomo Ice Guards. it’s such a good deal for a very good tire. I was buying 16 inch steel rims coupling them with 205- 60-16’s to make an affordable winter tire package for the fwd and the awd Kizashis that could be sold for $500. The tire dealer quickly ran out of the 205‘s and I ended up having to switch to the 215 for a few dollars more but they are an awesome tire. The Toyota Camry steel rim 16 inch is the perfect fit for the Kizashi . Hub centric and all but these rims are hard to come by. I found that the 16 inch steel rims from the Altima have a larger center but same bolt pattern . Being hub centric on steel rims with regular tapered lug nuts isn’t as crucial as fancy aluminum rims running through the turns during summertime and the markets loaded with them making them inexpensive. In the snow belt the fwd rolling on half tread summer 18s is nothing short of a menace on the road but putting a set of the Ice Guards on turns it into a monster.

I like Sumitomo tires too. I had them on my Mazda3. I had the HTR A/S P01. They were the generation before the P02 and were uni-directional. Much like the P02, they had great reviews while being a great value. I liked them quite a bit while I had them but didn't run them down as I sold the car with those tires on.

While Sumitomo Tires is somewhat an off-brand in the US, they are a division of one of the world's oldest and largest corporations. In fact, the Sumitomo Tire Division owns Falken and Dunlop tires. They have a huge corporate building in my hometown of Kobe, Japan located about a 30 minute walk from my parent's house. What I didn't realize until researching it recently is that the building is the company's global HQ.

I currently have Falken Ziex ZE950 tires which I like. Great grip and great value. About my only minor complaint is that they generate more road noise than my former Michelins but those were literally twice as much. It seems like Falken and Sumitomo tires have great designs and features and get the lower cost from manufacturing in Thailand instead of Japan.
