And you bring up a good point about temperature as the Altimax Arctics sidewalls start to get mushy above 50 degrees. They are best when it is near freezing or below freezing.KansasKid wrote:Other than sub par snow handling, the Michelin Pilot Sports are really nice, as long as it's above freezing. If you don't have to deal with snow more than a handful of times every winter, I totally recommend them.
All-season tires
I can vouch that you should not run you Altimax Arctics tires once it is above about 40F as well. If you only run them when it is cold they will last forever, but if it warms up it starts to eat them in a hurry.
Which is why I decided against using bridgestone ws80 or Michelin X Ice3 and went with Nokian WRG3. Winter tires that can be used all seasons all weather all the time .Moto wrote:I can vouch that you should not run you Altimax Arctics tires once it is above about 40F as well. But do they grip like dedicated snow tires?yoshi2012 wrote:...and went with Nokian WRG3. Winter tires that can be used all seasons all weather all the time .
They actually perform better than most snow tires. CR rated it as the best performance winter tire along with Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 are a very close secondSamirD wrote:But do they grip like dedicated snow tires?yoshi2012 wrote:...and went with Nokian WRG3. Interesting. I'll have to check these out when our Arctics wear out.bootymac wrote:They actually perform better than most snow tires. CR rated it as the best performance winter tire along with Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 are a very close second

Nope, sorry. I have no idea how long they were on the car, and I changed them almost 2 years ago. If I had to guess though, I'd say they were RE050's. I found an eBay listing saying the RE050's were from 2009, which would have meant that they lasted at least 3 years on my Kia. I can't say for certain though.FrankoLaMoya wrote:Hey KansasKid,

I replaced the oem tires with Continental Purecontacts. They are really nice in good weather, worked amazingly well in the snow we got this season, they have a good treadwear warranty, and they look nice. Other than an installation horror story ( no fault of the tire) I'm very pleased.
