The majority of people are right handed, so to sit on the right hand side of the car is natural. If you drive on the right hand side of the road, that means you have to sit on the left. Per head of capita the UK is the safest country in the world to drive, and I believe that driving on left contributes to this.eatrocks wrote:they put your steering wheel on the wrong side
Never thought of it that way. Shifting manual with the dominate hand (right) while sitting on the left makes sense, but then having your dominate hand (again the right) as your main steering arm could theoretically give you better control of the car. *shrug
Maybe it doesn't make so much sense, but it did in my head!

Leaving which side of the road you are on out of the equation, I can tell you for a fact that left or right side steering location matters very little. I drive left side to work and after work, and right side all day at work. Your focus is always on the center of the vehicle, and you don't really sit that far off the center of your vehicle, it just seems that way. New folks at my work learn it right away. Manual shift? That part seems like it would be a little tougher left to right.
