Was it 10.0? I finally had a chance to get some vernier calipers on mine and without squeezing the gasket at all mine is 9.25mm. That would explain the noise I am getting... Can you confirm that the oem is supposed to be 10.0? I will complain to amazon. I bought the Wix filter on RockAuto and it's great. However, it was not cheap. It was like $30. I'm willing to go cheap on the cabin filter, but not the engine's.

This was definitely what was causing my problem. I just applied a strip of 3m tape on the bottom side of the flange under the gasket and put the gasket over it and the vibration and noise is completely gone. The filter went back into the airbox nice and snug but it closed very nicely without any extra effort.
I work in automotive manufacturing and this dimensional mismatch is unacceptable. On a feature like this flange, the tolerance for the thickness should be a few hundredths of a millimeter. I have driven about 3000 miles on this filter, I hope unfiltered air hasn't been leaking through the gap.

I had a similar issue with my XL-7. An aftermarket air filter that the gasket wasn't the right size - I could see where dust had been leaking through on the inside of the air filter box.
It wasn't a cheap aftermarket filter either. From now on I'm sticking with OEM as we don't get the huge selection of aftermarket quality brands here.
PS: I later bought an aftermarket cabin filter for it off Amazon - that was too big and had to be modified to fit

For pennies on the dollar and 10 minutes of work with a pair of scissors and a roll of 3m tape I don't mind using an improper filter, I just wish I caught it sooner.
How long did you run the filter on the xl7? did you have any issues with your cylinders or valves or maf sensor?

The XL-7 filter was like it for a long time - like years / 20000km + probably. No problems with it. I don't think it was as extreme as your example, I only discovered it from trails of dust going up the inside of the air filter box lid when I checked how dirty it was. Then I checked the air filter gasket and noticed it wasn't a good fit.
It's like $56 odd for a genuine air filter here, and around half that price for a supposedly quality aftermarket filter (that leaks....) Given the long life span of the air filter, I don't mind paying the extra for OEM - knowing I won't have abrasive dust going through my engine.

Last time i spoke with my dealer the air filter was something like 160 bucks

An OEM air filter itself should cost around $30.
