Any interest in a USB adaptor for aftermarket head units?

The Do It Yourself section is used provide assistance with mods and fixes. Whenever you are making a change to your car please take pictures and notes. I was wondering if there would be any interest out there for an adapter harness (for after market head units) that would enable the use of the factory USB port in the centre console for audio/ video playback? It requires a custom made interface harness to work- due to the non standard plug used by Suzuki.

(I've got mine working with an aftermarket head unit and thought other people might also be interested. I didn't want a second USB cable floating around in the glovebox or centre console when the factory provides a USB port!)

There's a risk of getting things seriously wrong (with how I've done mine) so I'm not going to put up DIY instructions. (I don't want to be responsible for people shorting out the USB plug on their head-units and doing who knows what damage.)

You need specialised parts to do it properly, it's not just some bits you can get from your local electronics stores. I was going to investigate the feasibility of obtaining the correct plugs etc to do it in a professional manner, but obviously there isn't the interest there so I won't be bothering.

I myself would be very interested. It really comes down to the cost and ease of installation.

Ease of installation would be "plug and play", however, the cost would come down to the pricing of the propriety plugs Suzuki have used. I did find the supplier but didn't get a price as there doesn't seem to be much interest.

I have the wiring blueprints for the car i will post a how to once i get to it. You dont need the special connector if you are handy with a set of crimps or a soldering gun.

Yes, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to do the modification. However, if you short out the USB plug (through not using the correct connectors) then you will most likely end up with a dead head unit. Hence my warning.

You also don't need the car "wiring blueprints" to do this mod! It's a USB plug that you're making.

Easier thing to do is just put the other end of a usb extension in place of the factory usb.
Without a "diagram" you would have fun finding the other end of the factory usb.

Yes, that could be done. The factory outlet has the protective cover and fits nicely though!

The whole compartment has its own protective door lol. Mine fell inside the dash anyways so when i take it apart to put it back im probably just going to fasten the end of the extension there instead. Challenge accepted for making it fit cleaner than that ugly square boss they put it in :)
