I found today that one of the lining guards of the wheel arch has become unclipped and warped out of shape so its sitting in loosely. I wouldn't have noticed it other than I heard it rattle when I closed my bonnet today.

The issue ended up being a faulty shock which had damaged some other components. New parts being installed within the fortnight.

The shock absorber is built into the strut, so I'd say you were right by describing the "shock" as the failing part. (Unless the strut housing itself has physically broken?)

(Often with McPherson type struts, the shock absorber is a removeable "cartridge" that can be replaced within the strut.)

Its hard to tell, he just described it as a factory fault within the strut, something to do with its alignment? I cant see any damage so who knows at this stage, ill find out more when I go back.

There's the breakdown. It doesn't appear that Suzuki just do an insert- you buy a whole new strut.
