Question about plasti dipping front grill

So I bought a can of graphite colored plastidip for the grill, to hide the chips. Not really into the flat black look. In any case, for those of you who painted the grill, did you guys remove the grill or paint it installed? I've see guys do it with the grill still on, but I'm assuming they somehow protected the radiator. Just looking for easy simple ideas. Thanks!

I pulled mine off to dip it. but I had already had the bumper off anyway. I only did the lower grill, and it was kind of a pain to get it out of the bumper.
