Do you drive in a city or suburb with frequent stops or traffic? While speed does certainly affect fuel economy, what really kills it for an internal combustion engine is frequently reduced speeds and crawling in traffic. Weshoot2 drives fast but lives in what seems to be a rural area of Vermont. Hence, he often gets good MPGs by maintaining a speed above 50 MPH for most of his trips. In contrast, I don't drive nearly as fast, but live in Maryland and commute into DC, a city with terrible traffic. I average 22~23 MPG mostly due to traffic. I once live-monitored my MPGs with Dash Command in inner-city rush hour traffic and it was showing an average of 16 MPG.
That being said, in the last 2 weeks, I've had to make 3 round trips to airports not too close by. Due to the longer distance freeway driving, my car is showing around 30 MPG so I'll likely get around 28 MPG (after the city driving drops it down too). The best average I ever got was 34 MPG when it was almost entirely freeway driving.

The area I live in has a bit of both. But my drive to work is short with a bunch of stops. I think that's what really kills it. but even if i take a trip of all highway miles I still only get 26-27 max.

Oh my; once again a Spidey-sense Story:

So with the cold weather causing me to sit longer idling before driving away, and my more recent regular excursions past 100MPH, I decided to get my oil changed early (for me  ).

So Monday I made the appointment for Tuesday morning, and romped the long way home that evening.
Tuesday morning as I got on the 23-mile Interstate portion of my drive to the "Suzuki" dealer, I said to myself "Since this oil is getting replaced I should use it all up" and cruised in at 110--118MPH :drive:

Got there, checked in, sat a bit until it got lifted, then went out to the shop to check underneath and tear off the pieces and parts that are dragging (not much left for plastic underbody trays  ).

Oh, and the entire thing was coated in oil.

I'd blown out an oil pressure sensor; oil spray ruined the serpentine belt, too.
$385 later, happy Tim was on his way (past 100MPH.....).

Lucky early oil change decision, perhaps due to my subconsciousness tuned to my Kizashi, all very Spidey-sensed?

Last tank Gulf premium 26.9 MPG.

Wow,lucky you spider-man...sometimes when those senders go, it's catastrophic and all the oil pumps straight out like an open spigot, as in within seconds it's all on the road.

So your ex-zuk dealer had an OE sender, and to a lesser extent, the belt, in stock?

They had the sensor in stock; the belt came from a supplier 'up the street'.
3 hours total time (including lunchtime).

It had dribbled a wee bit Monday night onto my garage floor; it was obvious it was pumping out heavily after my zippy run to the dealer, hence the entire bottom of the car getting 'oiled'.
