Yeah, I thought the same. $8500 was a great trade-in. Maybe NiteRider should change professions and become a dealer negotiator agent. I could use his negotiating skills with my next dealing with a car dealer.

Kizzy's in this area (Central PA) was going for 8 - 11K retail based on that mileage so I knew what I was working with. I like to sell my previous cars privately as it makes more fiscal sense but was l surprised I got that much for it from a dealer. Of course you need to factor in the little dealer trick where they say they are giving you that much for trade in when they are really just lowering the costs of the new vehicle. However, I did factor this in as I knew 6.2% off the MSRP was near the limit for a CX-5 and was indeed the represented cost on the term sheet.redmed wrote:Yeah, I thought the same. $8500 was a great trade-in. I was walking out the door too during negotiation as I wasn't thrilled to be giving my car up anyway; so right there I had power position. In the end, I ended up with a great deal.
I'm a Director for Financial Planning and Analysis so this negotiation was sport for me.

I think dealerships make people think that they got a great deal. They are not going to sell you a car and not make the money they need to make. Depending on their sales goals, etc, sometimes they may need to make more than others, but they never lose. Want more for your trade? You'll get less discount on then new one. Finance it? Lower price as they make money on that end. Certainly some will get better deals than others because the dealership will squeeze whatever it can. Some people are just more squishy and dealerships take full advantage. I'm sure most of us have a few horror stories either personal or somebody we know who got fleeced.
Negotiate the price of the new vehicle first without mention of a trade clouding the issue. Then bring the trade into the equation after you get what you want on the new car's price. They don't want to play fair on the trade...walk away, it's that simple.
Alrighty then! If ever I'm in the market for a Honda, I'll make the trek up to VT.WESHOOT2 wrote:Why I work where I work: In the 7+ years I've sold here no one has been robbed on their trade, or paid too much.

I prefer "untethered" vs "unanchored".
We keep the trade separate from the sales price here, and simply show the customer ACV (ActualCashValue) of their trade-in.
We're not big on selling used cars here, and virtually all are our brands --BMW, Mini, Honda, Mercedes-- are Factory Certified.

Retirement knocking on the door aye?
Loooong time ago a dealer once told me after I complained about the trade value "oh we're going to send it to the auction". Meaning they really didn't want or need it and explaining they're not going to get much for it at auction, blah, blah, blah. Then, there it was sitting on their lot for a metric-azz-load more than what they showed me on the trade. I then learned how the game was played. Years later, the internet came along and leveled the playing field a bit. ( Positive use of the tech Kuro! ) Ever since then, I negotiate rock bottom cash OTD price on the new. Then I tell them what my trade is and what I want for it (obviously needs to be a solid trade-in of course). They always come around, takes time and usually have to leave w/o signing, but they eventually come around...most of the time. Occasionally they don't.

That's a surprisingly good trade in value. I guess the Kizashi's resale value slide has stabilized in some markets.
Negotiating for buying a car has been a bit of a sport for me as well. Last time I did was helping a friend buy a 2016 RAV4 that stickered at $28500 for $25500 OTD. He couldn't believe it.
