Winter Tires?

Anything related to the Kizashi can go here, but please look at the other headings first. Your topic may fit better under something else.

I would also like to get a set of 16 inch S model rims for use with winter tires.

I checked with my Suzuki dealer here in Canada, and they are charging $120 for a Suzuki 16 inch steel rim.

Has anyone else checked these prices from their dealer either in US or Canada?

I would like a genuine Suzuki rim to ensure perfect fit, but $120 each seems excessive.

120 for steelies? You might be better getting a cheap all season alloy. I had steelies before in my precious car with the dedicated winter tires, and I went don't a size to 14. I paid something like $55 per wheel, but that was 4 years ago.

i have checked it and just say i wouldnt buy any parts from a dealer if not necessary. as for perfect fit, what you need to look for is bolt size and the bolt pattern, make sure that centre hub fits, i am no expert at this (read: do some reading dont take my word for it), but a little research will be able to save you some money.

I would probably check tirerack.com They often have good deals on sets of tires and wheels.

$89 for 17 inch alloy wheels.

I run a similar setup with studded General Altimax Arctic tires and my car handles about as good on glare ice and snow as it does blacktop in the winter. The only real concern I have is getting hit from behind.

If you use steel wheels (or the tirerack alloys) without a new set of sensors, what does it do again to the panel display in the car?

I haven't see it yet on the kizashi but I assume its similar to the sx4. All that will happen is a small light will pop on that looks like a flat tire with an exclamation point. Pretty easy to deal with for a few months in the winter if you don't want to mess with sensors.

Mine came on the other day - the whole center display turns orange and only displays the low tire pressure warning.

No way could I drive all winter like that!

Best price I have seen for tires is at http://www.tiresonline.com

This is true. Unfortunately it is nothing like the SX4. I have aftermarket wheels on my sx4 for summer(i use the stock alloys with TPMS for my winter tires). As Jute says, there is just a little yellow light that flashes for a minute when you start the car, then satys lit. Easy to ignore. The Kizzy is impossible to ignore, the stupid light on the dash flashes along with the center display turning yellow and periodically flashing(i think it chimes also). Hugely annoying. I wish i could disable it.

My Kizashi GTS handled like a car on rails last winter w/ non-studded General Altimax Arctic 16" tires. I went to a local tire shop and ordered 4 of them (cheaper than Tirerack) and 16" alloy wheels that their system said fit my car. The alloys were $49 (made in Chinc of course).

The rim held up well throughout the winter, no corrosion or issues. I believe I'll likely be able to get 4 or more winters out of the snows too.

As for the TPMS sensors, I didn't have them installed. What happens is the TPMS symbol will illuminate within the speedometer area and the display turns yellowish orange saying "check TPMS system"

Unfortunately you can't do anything about the display. If you need to get to the other info, you can hold down the Info/Display button (not Trip) and the display will change back to blue/white and you can scroll through the different readouts. That only lasts for about 5 seconds after your last button push, then it reverts back to the yellow tpms display.

So to make it less distracting, I put a piece of black electrical tape over the TPMS symbol in the speedo area, and the display wasn't an issue. It's not a bright yellow/orange, more dark. And it doesn't flash. You will turn on the car, it will make a "ping" to notify you to look to the display, and the display will then turn to yellow/orange and display the msg.

Hope that helped let me know if you have any questions!

I wish the low pressure system would tell you which tire is low, I am sure my tires are overinflated cause of the system, its impossible to ignore! LOL! I need a tire pressure gauge but after I have satisfied the Low pressure I drive on forgeting what a pain that thing is!
